Daniel Arsham studied Architecture at the Cooper Union in New York City, where he received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award in 2003. Arsham makes architecture do things it is not supposed to do, searching everyday experiences for opportunities to confuse and confound our expectations of space and shapes: a façade that appears to billow in the wind, a figure wrapped up in the surface of a wall. In a lot of his art, movement and time are suggested in striking images that require the viewer to challenge first impressions. The passage of time is also conveyed in the notion of decay or damage; we see imperishable objects such as cameras and telephones take on a fossilised or eroded form when he creates them from compressed crystal and rock powder.


For “Here to There”, Arsham has conceived a 3-minute video celebrating the Maison’s close ties with America. His short film features video artwork especially created by five international artists for the Hennessy 250 Tour, each interpreting Hennessy's strong and historic links with the USA, which is equally significant to the artist as his birthplace and home. Here, anticipating on a possible future, Arsham looks back at the legacy of our time as various objects, such as clocks, cameras, and televisions carved from ice seem to emerge from a frozen capsule. His short film questions our perception of themes recurrent in Hennessy’s adventure in America and central to what the Maison is today: time, history, and American culture.
