Dineo Seshee Bopape was born in 1981 in South Africa. She started studying painting and sculpture in Durban, and graduated from De Ateliers in Amsterdam in 2007 to then complete a Masters of Fine Arts at Colmbia University, New York. Her work is multidisciplinary, yet very united as a whole: video, drawing, painting and performance are all combined in dense, chaotic and brightly coloured installations to engage the viewer and convey a powerful political and social message. The notion of self is a particularly important one for the artist, which she explores through themes such as gender, race, sex and psychology.

HENNESSY 250 TOUR COMMISSION - In relative opacity: every generation must discover its mission, fulfill it or betray it in relative opacity - Part 1

Dineo Seshee Bopape’s project for the Hennessy Commission is a visual experience. The video’s intention is to film landscapes through a bottle in high-altitude shots. Filmed with a Go-Pro, or a spy camera inserted in a liquor bottle, Bopape wishes to focus on the experimental nature of the piece, allowing the work to become what it has to become without dictating too much to it.
