Born in 1980 in Shanghai, Yongliang studied traditional Chinese art since childhood and graduated from China Academy of Art, which shows in his whole body of work. His bond with traditional aesthetics is undeniable: he explores ancestral Chinese art forms such as Shan shui landscapes to dive the viewer deep into an eery world of illusions. His work, however, brims with a strong sense of post-modernism. Photography, painting, video, or even installation are used to challenge tradition, criticise modernity and the devastating effects of mass urbanisation and industrialisation. Having gained acclaim from international art institutions, his work has been exhibited, amongst other places, at the Moscow Biennale, the Metropolitan Museum and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art.

HENNESSY 250 TOUR COMMISSION - Kaleidoscopic Fluid

Yongliang’s project, Kaleidoscopic Fluid, depicts a square of liquid reflected patterns, as if in a kaleidoscope. One the one hand, the work focuses on the sensual response of the viewer, echoing the sensory stimulation of a glass of cognac. However, diving deeper into the glass reveals more than taste, colour and smell: the work also speaks of a culture, a tradition that sustains through the passing of time. As the shapes of the fluid spread and transform, so does the Hennessy heritage. The fluid is also water, that connects the world as a whole, and carries civilisation from one generation to the next.
