Since its foundation in 1765, Hennessy has been inextricably linked with water, with the nearby river Charente constituting a vital artery for the company’s commercial successes across the world. Apart from its being an essential of life and crucial to the flourishing of the vines from which eau de vie is produced, water enhances the flavours of Hennessy cognacs. Hennessy’s oenologists have worked hard to achieve the perfect marriage of water and Fine de Cognac. 5.5 Designers put much thought into creating items designed exclusively around drinking cognac cut with water. These deliberately « sustainable » items reflect Hennessy’s commitment to the environment. Indeed, the company has operated a sound environmental management system for almost fifteen years. The « H20, Hennessy and water » exhibition presents these different facets through archive material and contemporary photographs arranged in three bubble-shaped areas representing the various states of water (solid, liquid and steam). Exploring Hennessy’s association with water, the photographer, Antoine Bagot, has produced pictures in pale, watery colours and compositions at the margins of still life which prompt the visitor to view the company’s protection of water in a different light. A soundtrack arranged by Marc-Antoine Beldent accompanies visitors as they browse the exhibition.
