Common debuted in 1992 with the album Can I Borrow a Dollar? and maintained a significant underground following into the late 90s, after which he gained notable mainstream success through his work with the Soulquarians.
His first major label album, Like Water for Chocolate, received widespread critical acclaim and moderate commercial success. Its popularity was matched by 2005's Be, which was nominated in the 2006 Grammy Awards for Best Rap album.
His first Grammy was awarded in 2003 for Best R&B Song for "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)" with Erykah Badu.
Throughout his career Common has collaborated with a wide array of music luminaries such as Prince, Jill Scott, Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, The Roots, D’Angelo, The Neptunes,, Lily Allen, will.i.am, Mos Def, Roy Hargrove
Common has also initiated a burgeoning acting career, starring significant roles in such films as Smokin' Aces, Street Kings, American Gangster, Wanted, and the upcoming Terminator Salvation.
In addition to his music and film success, Common has crossed demographic boundaries as the pitchman in national ad campaigns for The Gap and Converse Red. Most recently, Common partnered with Microsoft to create a line of 80’s computer-inspired clothing called Softwear.
Common also started the Common Ground Foundation, an organization dedicated to utilizing the cultural relevance of Hip-Hop to serve as an advocate for justice, education, to fight poverty, and to increase health awareness amongst youth in underserved communities throughout the United States.
