To celebrate his 100th New Yorker cover, the Quais Hennessy, an exhibition space created by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, is showing works by this French illustrator in love with New York from 17 June to 31 October 2010. Sempé's lightness of touch, which brought the famous Petit Nicolas to life, has become a vital ingredient of the New Yorker, the world-famous magazine of artistic and literary criticism. Sempé has a particular affection for the prestigious publication, which has celebrated cartoons since 1925 in order to keep the news in perspective. His covers for the magazine over more than thirty years have depicted stolen moments in the lives of unknown people with irony and precision, plunging us into the excess of the Big Apple or inviting us into the warm, intimate atmosphere of a jazz club. The history of Maison Hennessy reveals the same affection for New York City, which first appeared in the company's commercial registers in 1795 and never left, demonstrating the New Yorkers' deep attachment to the cognac house. New York became the distribution hub for the whole country, but exports to Boston, Baltimore and Philadelphia also increased. The United States quickly became one of the house's major markets. This exhibition thus bears witness to the close bonds Hennessy has forged with the USA and to the company's commitment to supporting cultural and artistic life.
