HENNESSY HERITAGE MEETS CONTEMPORARY CREATION

The tour sees Hennessy’s legacy – its unique expertise and emblematic objects that have marked its history - interpreted through the eyes of internationally renowned artists: photographers, filmmakers, and designers including Xavier Veilhan, Charles Sandison, Pierrick Sorin, Tony Oursler, Anton Corbijn, and Constance Guisset.

A TALE OF TWO FAMILIES1

A TALE OF TWO FAMILIES

"INFINITAS" is an installation by visual artist Charles Sandison built on the founding documents of the Maison, including texts and letters from the Hennessy and Fillioux families, their signatures, the act of foundation of the Maison. Inspired by these written archives, Sandison transcribes the multi-generational story of an on-going quest. A seemingly endless tunnel, the artist explores the Hennessy DNA.

FROM THE LAND TO THE SAVOIR FAIRE2

FROM THE LAND TO THE SAVOIR FAIRE

In this diorama, the artist recreates himself as several different characters and delves into the mysteries of Hennessy’s ageing and blending of eaux-de-vie. Along the way, he manipulates objects essential to the process of creating cognac. The real world of Hennessy is reappropriated into an unusual and entertaining walk in the heart of Cognac. It’s “just like being there”.

THE SECRET OF LEGACY3

THE SECRET OF LEGACY

Inspired by the secrets that encircle the creation of Hennessy cognac, notably the secrets between members of the Maison's Comité de Dégustation. Tony Oursler brings us an installation of poetry and sound, where languages, nationalities, and cultures enter into a strange and surreal dialogue. Characters are interlinked by an uninterrupted flow of fluid in a metaphor of the uninterrupted chain of legacy.

AN ESSENTIAL CAST4

AN ESSENTIAL CAST

Behind every Hennessy creation are the people who made it possible. These portraits reveal the real soul of the Maison, making the invisible visible by capturing the appearance, the aura of these actors in the Hennessy story. Anton Corbijn has created us a Hennessy portrait gallery. We discover the personality and energy of those he has photographed, be they winegrower, distiller, cooper, calligrapher, or international agent, past or present.

A PANORAMIC STAGE5

A PANORAMIC STAGE

The stage is interactive and modular, with movable partitions (inspired by the staves of a cognac barrel) that open and close as we progress through the scenes of this final act in the Hennessy experience. When closed, these partitions become a screen for films by five international artistes. When open, they reveal a stage on which local artists perform in different productions that change from country to country. Happenings—readings, choreography, performances—that take us back and back, following the thread that has drawn Hennessy to the far ends of the Earth: the drive to pass on a legacy, combined with a passion for other cultures.

HERE TO THERE

A reflective piece, and typical of his videography, Daniel Arsham's short film for H250 plays with notions which are central to Hennessy's identity today: time, history, and synchronic snapshots of culture. His film explores the complexities and events that have shaped the relationship between Maison Hennessy and the USA, where Arsham grew up, studied, and still works today. A global brand, active in the world's most powerful nation, Arsham highlights the relevence of this relationship through the exploration and presentation of objects, or artefacts, which represent these events.

CRAFTING THE FUTURE11

CRAFTING THE FUTURE

To conclude this excursion through the Hennessy universe, visual artist Xavier Veilhan was given carte blanche to portray the Maison’s 250 years in an emblematic, totemic manner. This has given us a “tool for vision”, a favourite theme of the artist, that sheds light on past, present, and future simultaneously. The creative, human, and universal adventure of Hennessy soars into time and space. His “rocket” is a mysterious object that challenges the visitor and fires the imagination. The “cosmic” work is an archetypal image of infinity, exploring the future of the Maison and symbolically heralding future conquests.
