DIAO JUAN, WINNER OF THE YISHU 8 GOLDEN PHOENIX PRIZE 2025

As a tribute to Chinese craftmanship, the 2025 Yishu 8 Golden Phoenix Prize, supported by Maison Hennessy, has been awarded to Diao Juan. Let’s follow her through her immersion in the heritage and the expertise of Maison Hennessy.

The designer Diao Juan weaves dreamlike creations using the ancient embroidery technique of Shu craftsmanship, which she combines with modern light, sound, and sensor techniques to create immersive artworks. In her view, innovation is a way to keep the Chinese heritage alive and to pass it on.

THE VALUE OF TIME

The theme for 2025 — weaving — stands for the link between Chinese craftmanship and the expertise of Maison Hennessy’s 'Atelier des Editions Rares', the silk thread placement. Diao Juan and Hennessy craftsmen come together around common values such as time: passing on their techniques requires both preserving tradition and continuous innovation.

A LONG-LASTING COMMITMENT

Maison Hennessy and Chinese culture

Founded in 2010, Yishu 8 is an artistic network which organizes residencies in Beijing and Paris, fostering exchanges between creators and patrons. Since 2020, Maison Hennessy has been supporting the Yishu 8 Golden Phoenix Prize. Each year, a jury of experts selects a laureate with exceptional craftsmanship, invited to discover Maison Hennessy’s heritage in Cognac.

Diao Juan graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. Her work has been shown in major exhibitions in China and abroad, including the International Youth Crafts Biennale.​ Weaving is a common thread connecting traditional Chinese artistry and the exceptional creations of Maison Hennessy's savoir-faire. In addition to her immersion in Cognac, Diao enjoyed several months of residency in France, supported by Yishu 8 and Maison Hennessy.

Hennessy has a special relationship with China, having exported its first cases of cognac to the country in 1859.
