Hennessy cooper making a barrel entirely by hand

Constructing new barrels and caring for the venerable barrels in which our eaux-de-vie mature requires patience, precision and an absolute mastery of woodcraft. For the first time, Maison Hennessy opens the doors of its prestigious Cooperage to visitors. Come and meet our master coopers, who pass along their passion for this ancestral craft from generation to generation.

Did you know? The esteemed craft of barrel-making is one of five time-honoured skills distinguished by the prestigious "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant". The accolade was bestowed upon Hennessy this year by the French Ministry of Finance, recognizing our commitment to preserving heritage craftsmanship.

Before being incorporated into a specific blend, an eau-de-vie must first age for a certain period of time in a French oak barrel. Eaux-de-vie and wood age together this way for years, exchanging flavors and colors.

Rows of old oak cellars aligned in one of our ancient cellars

After your visit of the Cooperage, we'll take you across the Charente River to discover some of our traditional ageing cellars. In this magical place, gain a better understanding of the ageing process and discover the natural phenomenon known as the “angels’ share”.

You will also have the privilege of visiting the historic 'Paradis' cellar — a repository for some of Maison Hennessy's oldest eaux-de-vie, usually inaccessible to visitors.

As your journey draws to a close, find out more about the 11am daily ritual of our Tasting Committee - an organization for excellence that is unique to Hennessy - and enjoy a guided tasting of 2 rare eaux-de-vie, as well as Hennessy X.O served neat and in a cocktail, paired with two gourmet macarons. The perfect, lavish finale to your time with us!
