To honour the 150th anniversary of Hennessy X.O, the Maison invited Frank Gehry to be a part of its ‘odyssey of the senses’ by designing his own X.O decanter. Using precious metals such as bronze, gold, glass and his own unlimited creativity, Mr. Gehry crafted a most exceptional Masterpiece.

Known for their curving, flowing architecture, Gehry-designed buildings bring calm to bustling cities. It’s fitting, then, that Gehry found his inspiration for the X.O carafe’s design in Cognac: In the Charente River that flows next to the Maison. The juxtaposition of smooth waters, strong currents, and glistening light spoke to him. “It’s a simple idea,” explains Mr. Gehry with signature modesty. “By crumpling up the material, it gives it a feeling of movement, gives it a feeling of life.”

The artist’s intent: To create a carafe that is as much a sculpture as a decanter. Artisans at the foundry cast the shell in bronze to replicate the Charente’s surface texture. This was then dipped in gold to create a finish that catches the light and mesmerises like water. The gold was crumpled to shimmer with movement, painstakingly chiselled by hand.

Every sip of Hennessy X.O is an odyssey for the senses. This extraordinary creation makes it even more so.
