A Very Special Artist for the 10th Limited Edition of V.S

Marking the 10th edition of its Hennessy Very Special Limited Edition guest series, the Maison is delighted to welcome the South African-born artist FAITH XLVII. A pioneer among urban artists, the LA-based talent describes her ascent to leading player on the international scene as “the cumulative result of an entire life's experience.” “I think I definitely had something to prove. There weren’t a lot of women in the space at that time, so I felt the need to challenge the status quo in a masculine environment,” recalls the artist, who first gained notice in her native South Africa in the late 1970s under her graffiti name, FAITH XLVII.

As she honed her signature, the artist felt “the excitement of being part of something underground.” Her work quickly stood out for an intuitive, feminine way of addressing her homeland’s complex social dynamic, notably in a series based on the country’s Freedom Charter. Now based in LA, FAITH XLVII belongs to a wider community of ‘woke’ artists. She describes her body of work - spanning monumental site-specific murals, collages, video installations and printmaking – as being united by a desire “to foster healing and awareness about the interconnected nature of the universe. ”We are actively reclaiming the feminine as something that is powerful and embraces the skills of intuition, the honesty of vulnerability and being attuned to qualities that hold wisdom and open doors for human compassion,” says FAITH XLVII.
